Operations Superintendent – DP World Melbourne, West Swanson Terminal

At DP World Australia, our people keep global trade moving.

We are seeking an experienced and highly capable Operations Superintendent to join the leadership team at West Swanson Terminal — one of Australia's key container terminal operations.

Reporting to the Operations Manager, this is a critical frontline leadership role responsible for the safe, efficient and commercially effective execution of Terminal operations across a complex 24/7 environment.

Leading a team of five Operations Supervisors and overseeing a large operational workforce, you will play a pivotal role in driving operational performance, maintaining service delivery to our customers and ensuring the terminal operates safely and productively around the clock.

This is a hands-on operational leadership position where you will make real-time decisions, lead high-performing teams and manage competing operational priorities in a fast-paced maritime environment.

About the Role

As Operations Superintendent, you will take ownership of day-to-day terminal operations including vessel, yard and landside activities. You will provide visible leadership across the terminal, ensuring operational plans are executed safely, efficiently and in line with customer and business expectations.

Working in partnership with planning, maintenance, safety and customer-facing teams, you will be accountable for operational outcomes including productivity, safety performance, labour utilisation and service delivery.

You will also play a key role in coaching and developing your supervisory team, driving accountability and fostering a high-performance culture across the operation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and coordinate terminal operations across a 24/7 container terminal environment
  • Provide leadership, direction and support to a team of Operations Supervisors operating across rotating shifts
  • Drive operational performance outcomes including productivity, safety, cost efficiency and customer service
  • Make critical operational decisions in a dynamic, high-pressure environment
  • Ensure safe execution of all operational activities and compliance with WHS&E requirements
  • Build strong working relationships with internal stakeholders, customers and workforce representatives
  • Lead workforce performance, capability development and operational accountability
  • Identify and implement continuous improvement initiatives to optimise terminal performance
  • Support operational planning and resource deployment to meet changing operational demands
  • Promote a culture of safety, teamwork, accountability and operational excellence

About You

You are an experienced operational leader who thrives in fast-moving, complex industrial environments. You bring strong leadership capability, sound operational judgement and the ability to influence outcomes through people.

You will ideally have experience within container terminal operations, ports, logistics, transport, mining, manufacturing or other large-scale industrial operations.

You will also bring:

  • Significant leadership experience within a 24/7 operational environment
  • Experience leading leaders and managing shift-based operational teams
  • Strong understanding of industrial relations within unionised workplaces
  • Proven ability to manage operational risk, competing priorities and time-critical activities
  • Experience driving operational performance and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
  • Resilience, decisiveness and the ability to lead under pressure
  • Strong commitment to safety leadership and operational discipline

Roster & Working Environment

This role operates on roster across 7 days of 4 x 12-hour day shifts on / 4 days off.

The role is shared with another Operations Superintendent, with both positions working collaboratively to ensure consistent leadership coverage across terminal operations, including weekends and public holidays.

Why Join DP World?

This is an opportunity to join a global logistics leader and play a key operational leadership role within one of Australia's busiest container terminals.

You will have the opportunity to:

  • Lead large-scale operational activities with real impact
  • Influence terminal performance and operational strategy
  • Develop and mentor frontline operational leaders
  • Work within a highly dynamic and complex operational environment
  • Be part of a collaborative leadership team focused on continuous improvement and operational excellence
